No, it’s not some twisted fantasy of a U2 hater, instead, “Killing Bono” is based on the true story of two brothers who form a band together but are consistently overshadowed by their classmates, who go on to form U2. That’s gotta hurt. And with a release date around the corner, you won’t be be surprised to find a U2 song on there but you might be surprised that a pre-U2 track by the shortlived The Hype has made its way onto the soundtrack.
Featuring six members, The Hype was mostly a cover band that eventually dropped a couple of members and became the U2 we know today. But, diehard fans note: the song on the soundtrack is a bit of a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that the song is “Street Mission” written by the The Hype, but those hoping to hear the actual band play it will be disappointed as it is performed by members of the cast. U2 themselves recorded a demo of the song way back in the day, and it was released in The Complete U2 digital box set a few years ago. As for the rest of the soundtrack, it is mostly made of tunes sung by the cast and also features Ed Kowalczyk, formerly of Live, for some reason.
The film stars Ben Barnes, Robert Sheehan, Krysten Ritter, Pete Postlethwaite, Luke Treadaway, Ralph Brown, Peter Serafinowicz and Martin McCann and will hit theaters in the U.K. on April 1st. The soundtrack will be released on March 28th. No word yet on a stateside release for either the soundtrack or film. Full tracklisting below. [Killing Bono Blog]
