'Killing Eve': Laura Neal Becomes Fourth Lead Writer In Four Seasons Of The Emmy-Winning Series

There are very few things in life that you can guarantee. The saying normally includes death and taxes, as the two primary things that will never change. Well, we can also add new lead writers for “Killing Eve.” As we’ve seen in the three previous seasons, right as a new batch of episodes is about to begin production, the network bosses announce a new woman that will become the lead writer for the BBC America spy series.

And for Season 4, which is set to begin production soon, Deadline reports that Laura Neal has been drafted to take over the duties and lead the Emmy-winning season to new heights.

“‘Killing Eve’ smashes television tropes in every way, both on the screen and behind it,” said Sarah Barnett, President, AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “We have a remarkable squad of ferociously smart women writers passing the baton to each other on this show, aligned around a coherent vision but bringing it to life with their own specific sparkle and brilliance. Laura Neal is the latest incredible leader of the pack on ‘Killing Eve.’”

As mentioned, “Killing Eve” is an incredibly rare show, just based on its behind-the-scenes switch-ups alone. Neal does, indeed, mark the fourth lead writer that the series has had in its four seasons. Each year, another woman takes over and leads the “Killing Eve” crew into another batch of episodes.

In contrast, most series find a lead writer/showrunner that works and sticks with them for as long as possible. Why mess up a good thing, you know? However, the first season was written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is one of the most in-demand talents in Hollywood, so the change-up was expected. The second season, which somehow got even more popular than the first was run by Emerald Fennell, who moved on and is on the precipice of releasing her feature film directorial debut, “A Promising Young Woman.”

Suzanne Heathcote took over for Fennell for Season 3, which has yet to air. However, BBC America is so high on “Killing Eve,” the network preemptively secured a fourth season before the next one even premiered. That, of course, meant Heathcote was hitting the road.

“After the most incredible year on ‘Killing Eve,’ I’m so excited the next season is going to be led by such a brilliant talent,” said Heathcote. “I cannot wait to see what amazing things Laura’s going to do with this world and the characters in it.”

Season 3 of “Killing Eve” premieres on April 26. It’s assumed that Season 4 will have a similar spring release in 2021.
