If you're in Canada right now, particularly in Ontario and Quebec, you already know that right now, it's fucking cold. But that's not going to stop Kurt Russell, Matt Dillon and Jay Baruchel who are going to tough out the Canadian winter to make us laugh. Those brave souls.
Dimension Films announced today its picked up the U.S. distribution rights to "The Black Marks," a new heist comedy starring the trio that is set to begin lensing later this month. Written and set to be directed by Jonathan Sobol ("The Beginners Guide To Endings"), the story centers on Crunch Calhoun (Russell), a third rate motorcycle daredevil and semi-reformed art thief, who agrees to get back into the con game and pull off just one more big time score with his untrustworthy brother Nicky (Dillon). Crunch reassembles the old team and comes up with a plan to steal a priceless historical book, but the successful heist leads to another, far riskier, plan devised by Nicky. What the brothers don’t realize is they each have their own agenda and their plan goes awry in this con movie about brotherhood, honor and revenge. The question mark here is what role Baruchel is playing, but we presume he's part of the heist and will somehow play a bigger role in the double dealings.
For Russell and Dillon, this looks like a nice quick job, before their work on two higher profile movies, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and the Linda Lovelace biopic "Inferno," respectively. As for Baruchel, it's an addition to what is shaping up to be a busy 2012, as he's already got the punk rock pic "The Rebel Kind" slated to lens this fall. All in all, it looks like a slick genre flick, and nothing wrong with that, but here's hoping the familiar premise raises the stakes a bit.
