Just about two weeks ago, it was reported that Focus Features was pulling Edgar Wright’s new film, “Last Night in Soho,” from its September release date for sometime in 2021. This came after many wondered what would be happening to the feature given the current state of affairs with theaters being shut down for months and the fall seemingly chock-full of high-profile features. Well, it appears that Wright has given us the answers we’ve been waiting for, and unfortunately, it means that fans will have to wait quite a while to see the new film.
The filmmaker tweeted, “Haunted by someone else’s past, but we’ll see you in the future… It’s true, #LastNightInSoho is not quite finished yet due to Covid 19. But, I’m excited for you all to experience it, at a big screen near you, on April 23, 2021.”
The new thriller stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham. As mentioned, it’s directed by Wright, who co-wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (“1917”). ‘Soho’ is the first feature for the filmmaker since the critical and box office hit, “Baby Driver,” which was released back in 2017.
When the film was pulled from its date, many wondered what the reason might be. Is Focus going to release the film on PVOD as the studio has done previously with mid-budget features like “The High Note” and “Irresistible?” Or was the film just trying to move out of a crowded playing field to early 2021? The answer seemingly was the unforeseen third option that Wright’s film just isn’t done and won’t be done in time for the fall, resulting in a new spring release date.
Originally, the film was expected to arrive in theaters on September 25. However, with the pandemic apparently delaying the post-production efforts of the film, fans will have to wait almost a full year to see “Last Night in Soho” when it hits theaters on April 23, 2021.
