Legendary’s 2016 Mystery Film Revealed: A King Kong Skull Island Movie

King Kong: Skull IslandSo much for those Namor rumors tied to a 2016 event picture! There were more details coming from Legendary’s Comic-Con panel this afternoon in San Diego, including footage of Michael Mann’s “Black Hat,” Duncan Jones’ “Warcraft,” and teaser footage and announcements from Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla 2.” Perhaps most notably, Legendary announced plans to release a new King Kong movie.

There were not many details beyond a possible, unconfirmed “King Kong: Skull Island” title, and a press release that read: “Previous works have touched on the island, but exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions. The film will be released on November 4, 2016.”

Slated for a November 4, 2016 release, this is the Legendary mystery movie that many had believed would be a superhero tentpole featuring Marvel Comic’s very first character, Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner (turns out Universal doesn’t actually own the rights to it, Marvel does… sort of, it’s complicated). Teaser footage was shown very briefly, and no director or cast has been announced yet.

With the success of "Godzilla" and "Pacific Rim," Legendary has shown great prowess with respect to reviving the "gigantic monster" genre. And it has been widely speculated that since Legendary owns both properties now, we may see a Kong and Godzilla showdown at some point.
