At 27 years old, Lena Dunham still has a long, bright future ahead of her, but she’s certainly accomplished quite a bit already. Her feature “Tiny Furniture” brought her to the attention of Hollywood and landed on The Criterion Collection (to the hand-wringing consternation of certain segments of pocket protector cinephiles), and her HBO show “Girls” continues to anchor the network’s Sunday night, with the third season winding down and a fourth already ordered. And despite Dunham’s fearlessness in the front of the camera, she’s already contemplating staying behind the lens and calling the shots.
Speaking with Glamour magazine, the actress revealed that she’s uncertain about continuing to play the roles she writes. “I don’t know if I’m going to want to act anymore,” she said. “I’m always relieved on the days I don’t have to. I’d rather give parts to other women than be the woman having the parts.”
And there is a certain logic to that, as giving the parts to other actresses allows for a great variety of interpretation and collaboration. And though Dunham is always busy with “Girls,” it’s perhaps telling that her only parts outside of the show of late have been in projects from friends and colleagues (Judd Apatow‘s “This Is 40,” the Alex Karpovsky-starring “Supporting Characters” and Joe Swanberg‘s “Happy Christmas“).
Anyhow, we’re sure this will provide more fodder for the Dunham obsessives, but for our part, she’s still a pretty fascinating presence on “Girls,” which winds down its last two episodes of season three across the next two weeks on Sunday night on HBO.
