Director Shekhar Kapur has been relatively quiet, in terms of feature films, for more than a decade now. The director of the Oscar-nominated features “Elizabeth” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” has yet to make another feature since the 2007 release of the latter film. But that’s about to change, as he has signed on to helm a new rom-com, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” featuring some really great actors.
According to Deadline, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” is set to be directed by Kapur and will star Lily James, Emma Thompson, and Shazad Latif, who is probably best known for his role in “Star Trek: Discovery.” The exact plot is under wraps but the rom-com is said to take place both in London and South Asia. The feature will be written and produced by Jemima Khan.

As mentioned, this is good news for film fans that have been looking for a new project from Kapur after his Oscar-nominated work on “Elizabeth” and the follow-up feature, both of which starred Cate Blanchett. Now, he has Lily James leading a cast. James is probably best known for her work on “Baby Driver” and has most recently starred in the Netflix feature, “Rebecca.”
Thompson is a living legend who has won two Oscars, one for acting in “Howard’s End” and the other as the screenwriter for “Sense & Sensibility.” Most recently, Thompson has shown up in films such as “Late Night,” “Men in Black: International,” “Last Christmas,” and this year’s “Dolittle.” Her next major role is in the upcoming Disney live-action feature, “Cruella.”
It’s unclear when we might see “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” arrive in theaters or streaming. Hopefully, the feature will begin production soon and we can see what Kapur is up to once again.
