Over the years, we’ve seen quite a few film projects attempt to discuss the struggle of Syrian refugees around the world. Typically, this story is told in documentary form, showing just how terrible the refugees have it as they try to flee their home country. The new film, “Limbo,” takes a different approach in showing the refugee experience.
As seen in the trailer for “Limbo,” the film follows the story of a Syrian refugee attempting to find asylum on a remote Scottish island. While there, he finds friendship with other folks hoping to hear news about their asylum claims. He also has to deal with the fact that he’s a Muslim man in a country that doesn’t quite understand and isn’t the most welcoming to people like him. And through it all, the man is carrying an oud, a musical instrument that has strong ties to his past life in Syria.
The new drama stars Amir El-Masry, probably best known for his work in “The Night Manager,” alongside Vikash Bhai, Ola Orebiyi, Kwabena Ansah, Sidse Babett Knudsen, and Kais Nashif. “Limbo” is written and directed by Ben Sharrock. The film serves as his directorial debut and was recently nominated for two BAFTA awards for Best British Film and Best Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.
“Limbo” is set to be released in select theaters on April 30. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
An offbeat observation of the refugee experience. On a fictional remote Scottish island, a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. Among them is Omar, a young Syrian musician burdened by the weight of his grandfather’s oud, which he has carried all the way from his homeland.
