The Comedy and Drama Series categories are filled with questions about what programs will fill out the eight slots allotted for each, but the Limited Series race is a battle royale for just five nominees. It’s so competitive there are arguably only two locks, “The Queen’s Gambit” and “WandaVision.” And there are two “should be” locks in “I May Destroy You” and “Small Axe,” but, sadly, neither is guaranteed to make the five.
Barry Jenkins’ unseen “Underground Railroad” is the current final pick, but it’s possible Television Academy voters embrace “Mare of Easttown” or former category winner “Fargo” instead. Meanwhile, can critic and guild favorite “The Good Lord Bird” sneak in? Do buzzworthy players “A Teacher” and “It’s A Sin” have a chance? Is “Genius: Aretha” a contender beyond Cynthia Erivo’s performance? And, hey, anyone out there remembers that ratings hit “The Undoing” from last fall?
The category is so rough we’re already over the fact that one of the best series of the past year, “Veneno,” has decided to qualify itself for the International Emmys instead. At least we can’t be disappointed if it doesn’t make the cut. [Updated April 28].
