The path to becoming a composer for film scores is not standard by any means, and Nate Heller took an interesting journey. While studying music production techniques and interning at University of California, San Diego in his 20s, he started touring the country nationally with his band Wendy Darling, and soon the group landed a record deal. From there, the band’s music was used in both film and television, and Heller seized the opportunity to carve out a new musical career. This month, his work can be heard in the critically acclaimed, Sundance and Berlin winning "The Diary Of A Teenage Girl," his first credited film score. Today we have some exclusive cuts to share.
Starring Bel Powley, Kristen Wiig and Alexander Skarsgard, the 1976 set tale follows the lonely 15 year-old Minnie (Powley) who begins a secret affair with her mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend. What follows is a dramatic/ comedic account of one girl’s sexual awakening —without judgment. Below, you can check out the variety of work Heller has contributed to the movie, from score cuts to folk songs and dream pop.
