We’d wager that trying to find any kind of merchandise possibilities for a movie called “12 Years a Slave” isn’t easy, but we have to admit that an “inspired by” soundtrack isn’t the first thing that would come to our mind. And yet, here we are, with full details on the disc that’s coming for Steve McQueen‘s tough, brutal drama.
Score fans will want to pay attention because Hans Zimmer will be well represented here with cuts from his work making the release. As for the rest? It’s a mostly appropriate batch of artists with folks like soul singer John Legend (who also executive produced the soundtrack), roots rockers Alabama Shakes and R&B sensation Alicia Keys contributing tracks. And then this is Chris Cornell aka Soundgarden frontman for some reason, singing a song called “Misery Chain.” We have many feelings about that.
” ’12 Years a Slave’ is such a stunningly powerful film. I was so moved when I saw it,” John Legend said in a statement. “I felt every minute of it and was so inspired to contribute to the music of the soundtrack. This album brings together some incredible artists from different places and different genres who have all been touched by the film. When artists are inspired by great art, it makes us want to create. This album is the result of that inspiration.”
The soundtrack will land digitally on November 5th, with the physical set becoming available on November 19th. “12 Years a Slave” is now playing in limited release and will expand in the coming weeks. Details below.
