Hot on the heels of the news of a “Fight Club” rock opera that Trent Reznor will write the music for, the Nine Inch Nails frontman has released new, unheard music from the soundtrack to David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” on his Apple Music page. This shouldn’t be a surprise, and there’s much more of it stored somewhere. When The Playlist spoke to Reznor and “Gone Girl” co-composer Atticus Ross, he suggested they have at least an EPs worth of extra material left over.
“We have more music too, don’t we,” Reznor told us as he looked at Ross who smiled back at him with a playful “maybe” like shrug. “Why did we bring that up again?” he laughed.
“Everything you hear on the [soundtrack] album is like the long form version of what’s maybe a few seconds of a snippet in the movie,” Ross said. “Then the album version is like the extended piece that goes on for five or six minutes, but you don’t always get that entire flavor in the movie.”
So yes, there are more music cues that you may have heard in the film that are already established as longer form pieces somewhere on Ross and Reznor’s hard drives. During our January interview, the duo suggested they might release the music in some form or another, but it appears as of right now, they are doing so piecemeal on Reznor’s Apple Music page.
The new track is called "Abandoned Sets," and its more of the eerie, buzzing, low-hum scorching sounds you hear throughout much of Fincher’s movie. Will they release more? Yes.

“Here’s the first of several tracks I’m planning on posting that Atticus Ross and I recorded for Gone Girl that didn’t end up getting used in the film,” Reznor wrote on his Apple music page. “We never start the composing process for a film by writing for specific scenes – we like to explore a variety of moods and textures to see how they feel in different places and contexts. This particular track is one we really love but wound up not playing so well with others… Let me know how it works out for you!”
Reznor also released video of a long session composing music for the movie. You can listen to “Abandoned Sets” below in its entirety.
