With the fall film festivals in the rearview mirror, it’s come to that point in the year where film fans begin talking about awards and top 10 lists. And while many of the big contenders have been screened already, there are some major holdouts that are waiting until later in 2019 to have their big debuts, including Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated “Little Women.”
However, the social media embargo has lifted on Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s famous novel and it appears that the filmmaker has picked up right where she left off with “Lady Bird” and crafted yet another film that is destined for awards glory.

Our own Gregory Ellwood saw the film and definitely agrees that the film will be an Oscar contender (you can read his more nuanced, detailed breakdown of “Little Women’s” Oscar chances) but isn’t completely sold on the film.
He tweeted, “‘Little Women’ is charming if not a wee bit long. Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh are the standout performances. Best Picture nominee…maybe? Also for such a pretty score it’s overscored? There are moments you just want to hear the girls banter but…nope.”
While not an overabundance of critics claiming that Gerwig has created a masterpiece, there seems to be generally positive buzz from many folks who have seen “Little Women.” And probably as no surprise to anyone who has seen the two women in a film previously, Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan are being singled out as the stand-outs in a cast that is notably stacked. In the case of Pugh, if you’ve seen “Midsommar,” then you’re well aware that the actress is one of the best young talents in Hollywood and is clearly poised for superstardom.

So, even with the mountains of hype, considering Greta Gerwig’s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated work on “Lady Bird” features an A-list cast and is adapted from one of the most beloved stories in fiction, it appears that “Little Women” is pretty great. If nothing else, it seems as if Gerwig has avoided the dreaded sophomore slump, joining returning filmmakers Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, and Ari Aster in quality second efforts in 2019.
“Little Women” arrives in theaters on Christmas Day.

Saoirse Ronan is going to land her fourth Academy Award nomination for #LittleWomen at the age of 25. In related news, I needed a two-hour nap today after stubbing my toe.

Jo's lines in #LittleWomen resonate w me completely differently now as a 33 yr old single writer. Wanting to remain independent but wanting to be loved. Greta's take on the story made me connect w Jo in a way I never had. As a girl, I just thought she was crazy to reject Laurie.

For my money, the MVP in LITTLE WOMEN is Florence Pugh. Hot off of MIDSOMMAR, Pugh is having a great year, and she’s hilarious and winning as Amy, the character best served by Gerwig’s structural gambits.

Little Women has a very strong last third, great cinematography and a modern interpretation of the novel that shines brightly. I liked her take on it even when it is hard to follow re: flashbacks. Acting good but Flo Pugh and Streep are standouts.

Oh hey, the #LittleWomen embargo has lifted. I love it more than rainbows. It's faithful but not fawning, fierce and funny. Ronan and Chalamet are spot on and Pugh is so good I almost forgive Amy after all these years (I MEAN SHE BURNT THE BOOK! AND STOLE THE TRIP TO EUROPE!).

The last three Best Picture winners—MOONLIGHT, THE SHAPE OF WATER, GREEN BOOK—end happily and portrayed the world as ultimately hopeful.
Greta Gerwig’s LITTLE WOMEN is the first movie of the year that does just that. So…front runner? (It’s inventive and wonderful.)

Saoirse Ronan makes all this look easy, once again proves, she is one of our most gifted actresses working.
Alexandre Desplat's musical score is undoubtedly not just one of the best compositions of the year, but one of the crowning achievements of his career. #LittleWomenMovie

So I've seen Little Women twice now and it's one of my very favorite movies of the year. Greta Gerwig delivers a both passionately faithful and gorgeously original take. Saoirse is a fierce Jo, Chalamet/Dern/Streep esp are great in support, and Florence Pugh is astonishing.

Greta Gerwig's @LittleWomen is wonderful. A loving, meticulously-crafted adaptation that exceeded my expectations. Heartfelt, moving and a terrific showcase for its extremely talented cast and beloved source material. pic.twitter.com/NwcMmnx9Pg

LITTLE WOMEN is charming just like the novel/prior versions. Each role perfectly cast. Rousing score. Timely as ever. Hard not to cheer. Greta says at q&a, “As a girl who wanted to be a writer, Jo March was my north star.” We’ll see as far as Oscars—nice to have an upbeat option. pic.twitter.com/WUDmtJwjd8

I’m a sucker for female-led costume dramas with Extra Feminism, so Little Women was gonna be in my wheelhouse anyway, but guys…. it’s good. Especially Florence Pugh. #JusticeforAmy

Based on additional discussions with screening attendees, #LittleWomen sounds like a strong #Oscars Best Adapted Screenplay contender, many telling me Gerwig was faithful to source material but added her own unique twist on things, also Pugh & @RealChalamet praised for supporting pic.twitter.com/Qt9n8j1Dvu

#LittleWomen could earn multiple Oscar noms, including best picture and directing for Greta Gerwig. As well as another for Gerwig for adapted screenplay.
As for acing noms–lead actress for #SaoirseRonan, suppporting for #FlorencePugh and possible #TimotheeChalamet.— Marc Malkin (@marcmalkin) October 24, 2019
The reaction to LITTLE WOMEN at an overflow screening at the Directors Guild is just crazy, wonderfully insane. Greta Gerwig is a goddamn rock star.
— Glenn Whipp (@GlennWhipp) October 24, 2019
#LittleWomen: Gerwig makes this material her own in delightful ways you’d expect and some adult-meditation-on-childhood ways I didn’t. So rewarding to see the ease with which she paints on this canvas and that she (or any director these days) was given it.
