On this episode, I’m joined by Playlist writer, video contributor, and Men vs. Movies co-host Griffin Schiller to discuss “Long Shot,” the political romantic comedy from Jonathan Levine, starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. The film debuted at SXSW to rapturous response (check out Griffin’s review from the festival here), followed by an impromptu Boyz II Men performance (that I’m still salty about skipping out on to catch up on reviews). As of this writing, the film is looking to pull in just $10 million in its opening weekend, which is a bummer considering that this is a clever, star-driven, mid-budget comedy that will sadly be relegated exclusively to streaming platforms soon if audiences don’t show up for it.

But before we dive into Levine’s film and what works so well about it, we dive into a little bit of movie news from the week. We discuss the backlash and meme-able character design from the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog” film and how the filmmaker’s reaction to the negativity is to overhaul the design before its fall release completely. We also touch on director Joe Carnahan’s Twitter meltdown in regards to his latest film – “El Chicano” – and how he’s the latest in a long line of recent celebrity outbursts aimed at critics, and how by the end of the day it’s just a bad look.
