Based on Robert Kolker’s 2013 true-crime novel of the same title, “Lost Girls” is a searing look at a mother’s relentless fight for justice against the system that failed her. From award-winning documentarian Liz Garbus (nominated for two Oscars, won three Emmys, won two Peabodys, maker of “What Happened, Miss Simone?,” “Bobby Fischer Against the World,” “Nothing Left Unsaid“), “Lost Girls” is the filmmaker’s first narrative effort. It stars Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone“) and it’s making its world premiere at Sundance next week, via Netflix, who has already set the movie for a Spring 2020 release.
The movie is essentially a disappearance drama. After her eldest daughter, goes missing in an affluent Long Island neighborhood, a mom (Amy Ryan) demands answers. This leads to a world of online world of sex workers, an indifferent police force, the exploitation of young women from rough, working-class backgrounds and taking matters into her own hands eventually.
