There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the German film “Luz.” After debuting at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, the film received rave reviews and has subsequently made appearances on the festival circuit, with showings at Fantasia Film Festival and the upcoming Fantastic Fest. And in honor of the film’s upcoming US premiere, we finally get a first look at the horror-thriller.
In the first teaser for the film, a couple things are readily apparent. First, and foremost, the teaser is definitely not here to spoon-feed viewers the plot. Images of a woman standing in a police station are intercut with everything from apparent demonic possession and some sort of satanic rituals. And second, it’s clear that “Luz” is a beautifully crafted film, clearly shot on 16mm, retaining the look of horror films of a bygone era.
“Luz” is the directorial debut from filmmaker Tilman Singer. The horror-thriller stars Luana Velis, Jan Bluthardt, Nadja Stübiger, and Johannes Benecke.
As mentioned, the film has its US premiere at the upcoming Fantastic Fest, and hopefully, soon after will be released theatrically. And if the teaser is any indication, “Luz” is a film that cinephiles will want to check out immediately.
Here’s the official synopsis:
A rainy night. A dazed and numb young cab driver, Luz, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a rundown police station. Across town in a nightspot, Nora seductively engages police psychiatrist Dr. Rossini in a conversation. Nora is possessed by a demonic entity, longing for the woman it loves – Luz. She tells the Doctor about her old schoolmate Luz’s rebellious past at a Chilean school for girls. Increasingly drunk on her story, Rossini turns into an easy prey in Nora’s hands, but he’s soon called away to the police station to examine Luz. Supervised by his colleagues, the doctor puts Luz in a state of hypnosis that initiates a series of flashbacks, unfolding the events leading to her arrival. But the entity that has taken control of the doctor wants something more. Bit by bit it slips into Luz’ reenactment and makes old memories come to light.
