M83, Lana Del Rey, Jay Z, Karen O & More Among 75 Eligible Submissions For Best Original Song Oscar

null

Unlike last year, which due to a convoluted voting system
only produced two nominees, this year’s Best Original Song Oscar looks to
showcase a number of stunners from 2013. We’ve already taken a stab at predicting
which tunes are likely to succeed on the big night, but now the list of
eligible songs in contention for final nominations at the 86th Oscars has been released so you can
forecast the results yourself.

The Academy has unveiled (via Thompson
on Hollywood
) their list of 75 eligible candidates for Best Original
Song, which is defined as consisting of “words and music, both of which are
original and written specifically for the film.” The clear frontrunner for the
award is Idina Menzel’s show-stopping
ballad “Let It Go” in Disney’s “Frozen”, the studio’s finest animated
work in quite a few years, but it might see some competition from Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” for “Despicable Me 2” and Karen O’s “The Moon Song” from Spike Jonze’s “Her”—both of which appear on the list.

As expected, the presence of existing source material has taken
the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” out of the picture
(“Please Mr. Kennedy” was the closest chance it had, and even a slim one
there). However, we’re delighted to see Keith
Stanfield
’s rap “So You Know What It’s Like” pop up on the list,
a centerpiece moment from Destin Cretton’s
drama “Short Term 12″. Other entries include Alexander
Ebert
’s “Amen” from “All is Lost
and Ed Sheeran’s “”I See
Fire” from “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, but check out the full list below—which includes tunes by M83, Jay Z, Lana Del Rey and more—and let
