It appears that one half of the Coen Brothers has decided to take on a Shakespearean classic for his next film. And to ensure this version of “Macbeth” is quality, he’s bringing along a couple of Oscar winners to headline the cast.
Deadline is reporting that Joel Coen has signed on to write and direct a new big screen adaptation of “Macbeth” that will star Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. If that’s not enough to sell you a ticket, then you must be insane.
For those not familiar with the classic story, from the legendary William Shakespeare, “Macbeth” tells the story of a Scottish general, Macbeth, that receives a prophecy from witches that say he is destined to become the King of Scotland. With this prophecy, the ambitious general begins his quest, aided by his wife, that sees him murder, scheme, and do anything he needs to on his way to attaining royalty. And once he has reached his goal, the psychological effects of his quest begin to take their toll.
As mentioned, Washington and McDormand are both Oscar winners. Washington has earned two such awards, stemming from his performances in “Glory” and “Training Day.” He’s also known for his roles in films like “Flight,” “Fences,” “Malcolm X,” and the recent “Equalizer” franchise.
McDorman also has two Oscars under her belt, with wins for her performances in “Fargo” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” She’s also known for her work in films like “Olive Kitteridge,” “Mississippi Burning,” and “Almost Famous.”
No word on why Joel Coen is flying solo with this venture. Normally, the filmmaker is joined by his brother Ethan.
“Macbeth” is set to be released by A24, but no release date has been named.
