It has been a long while since we've heard about Madeleine Stowe's dream project Western, "Unbound Captives." First announced way, way back in 2009, the film was set to star Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson, with Jackman set to play a frontiersman who rescues a woman (Weisz) whose husband is killed and children kidnapped by a Comanche war party. Pattinson was going to play Weisz's kidnapped son, a role that it was reported in 2010 would require him to speak "almost entirely" in Comanche. But despite kind words from everyone about the script, "Unbound Captives" has continued to sit unmade. But Stowe has high hopes that Pattinson will stay on board, even though he's approaching his 25th birthday and too old for the part.
"The character was conceptualized as an 18-year-old," Stowe told MTV at the Golden Globes, about Pattinson's character, while adding she wouldn't be adverse to aging up the role to land him. "We might. We might just do that. We'll see how it all falls."
While it's still up to Pattinson if he'll sign on, Stowe is keeping her fingers crossed that after after being announced three years ago, the movie will be able to shoot next spring. We're looking at 2013 right now," Stowe said.
Jackman and Weisz are both apparently still on board, but the former is booked up this year with "Les Miserables" shooting in the spring, which he'll follow with the long delayed "The Wolverine." As for Weisz, she's currently filming "The Bourne Legacy" and has "The Railway Man" with Colin Firth lined up after that.
But a lot can happen between now and then, and even with a potentially starry cast, financiers are wary of westerns or movies in general that don't involve explosions. We hope this one gets moving because word on the script is that it's very good, but for now, it still seems like a project on the distant horizon.
