Madonna To Direct & Co-Write Her Own Biopic For Universal

Often, when you see reviews of film biopics, there’s the criticism that the filmmaker took liberties with personal events and situations to make for better plotting. Most recently, you can see a lot of artistic license in the Oscar-winning film, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” However, one way to get around that criticism is to make sure the subject of the biopic writes and directs the film, which is what Universal is doing with the studio’s upcoming Madonna biopic.

According to Universal, the studio has agreed to team up with Madonna to release a new biopic based on the singer’s career in the music industry and her controversial life off the stage. And to help bring the film home, the studio has given the reins to Madonna, herself, to co-write and direct the feature.

As we reported recently, Madonna hinted at the project in a social media post that showed her working on something with writer Diablo Cody. We posited that maybe it was a biopic of some sort, but that was purely speculation. Well, apparently that was exactly the case, as Madonna and Cody are writing the script that the singer will then direct. In addition to those two women, Amy Pascal is also aboard to produce.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” said Madonna. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

Producer Amy Pascal added, “This movie is an absolute labor of love for me. I have known Madonna since we made ‘A League of Their Own’ together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”

Madonna is no stranger to films. Obviously, she’s had a number of big roles in features, such as “Dick Tracy,” “Desperately Seeking Susan,” and the aforementioned “A League of Their Own.” Behind the camera, the singer made her directorial debut with the feature “W./E.” She’s also helmed short films such as “Filth & Wisdom” and “SecretProjectRevolution.”

It’s unclear when production might begin on the untitled biopic. We still have to wait and see who the singer casts as herself. Hell, maybe she’ll use some tricks from “The Irishman” and play herself over the course of five decades? Needless to say, it’s going to be a very interesting film, no matter what.
