Finally! It’s like the movie gods have been listening or just really wanted us to stfu (which is admittedly understandable once in a while).
One thing that we’ve been carping on about in recent weeks is that the 2nd best (or around there anyhow) film from the 2009 Cannes Film Festival — Bong Joon-ho’s “Mother” — was not yet picked up for North American distribution.
A Kafka-eque, Hitchock-ian neo-noir thriller and murder procedural, we were going blue in the face asking, “why hasn’t someone acquired this yet?” Well, the English-language trailer arrived on Friday and now just today arrives the news that Magnolia pictures has picked up the film. Great, finally. All is well in the world, and acquired before TIFF no less, that’s great (Magnolia also put out the director’s monster movie, “The Host,” so this makes sense).
If you haven’t seen Bong Joon-ho’s, “The Host” or “Memories Of Murder,” run don’t walk. “Mother” will represent Korea in the Best Foreign Film category of this year’s Oscars too. Here’s our review from Cannes.
