What if your imaginary friend was real? And what if that real imaginary friend is evil? That’s the basic idea behind James Wan’s new horror film, “Malignant.”

As seen in the new trailer for the feature, “Malignant” follows the story of a woman that grew up dealing with her traumatic early childhood with the help of her imaginary friend, Gabriel. However, when she becomes an adult and is haunted by visions of grisly murders that might actually be reality, her past “friend” comes back to terrorize her new life.
As mentioned, “Malignant” is from director James Wan, who is taking a brief break from his “Aquaman” superhero franchise to return to his horror roots. He’s probably best known, outside of “Aquaman” and “Furious 7,” as the filmmaker who scared audiences in “The Conjuring,” “Saw,” and “Insidious.”
The film reunites Wan with his “Annabelle” star Annabelle Wallis. She’s joined in the cast by Maddie Hasson (YouTube’s “Impulse,” TV’s “Mr. Mercedes”), George Young (TV’s “Containment”), Michole Briana White (TV’s “Black Mafia Family,” “Dead to Me”), Jacqueline McKenzie (“Palm Beach,” TV’s “Reckoning”), Jake Abel (TV’s “Supernatural,” the “Percy Jackson” films), and Ingrid Bisu (“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” “The Nun”).
“Malignant” hits theaters and HBO Max on September 10. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
“Malignant” is the latest creation from “Conjuring” universe architect James Wan (“Aquaman,” “Furious 7”). The film marks director Wan’s return to his roots with this new original horror thriller. In the film, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
