The reveal that Giancarlo Esposito‘s Moff Gideon has the Darksaber at the end of “The Mandalorian” season 1 was the biggest surprise since Baby Yoda was unleashed on humanity. Though we still don’t know Baby Yoda’s name, we may get an answer on where the Darksaber came from, at least according to Esposito.

Talking to Deadline after receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, Esposito teased that “The Mandalorian” season 2 will dive into the history of the Darksaber.
“You’ll see more of the Darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world,” Esposito said. “Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later.”
Esposito added that the Darksaber “is a key to Moff Gideon’s past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”
Of course, we first saw the Darksaber in season 2 of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” where it was introduced as an ancient weapon that had killed many Jedi throughout the years. The saber was originally built by the first Mandalorian in the Jedi Order, and it is used as a symbol of power in “The Clone Wars” and its follow-up show, “Star Wars: Rebels,” uniting different clans under one leader.
Last time we saw the saber, it was in Darth Maul’s possession. Given that “The Mandalorian” season 2 will bring Ahsoka Tano to live-action, who’s to say they won’t also use the chance to bring back Maul?
As Esposito told Deadline in the interview, Moff Gideon may still have a few aces up his sleeve. “What we don’t know is how extra special he is yet,” he said.
