As seen in the trailer for “The Many Saints of Newark,” the film serves as a prequel to HBO’s “The Sopranos” and shows a young Anthony Soprano as he grows up in one of the most tumultuous times in Newark’s history, as crime families fight over control. The film also introduces ‘Sopranos’ fans to Dickie Moltisanti, a character that was talked about quite a bit during the original series run but was never given a chance to shine as he is in this film.
The new prequel stars Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Michael Gandolfini, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga. ‘Many Saints’ is written by ‘Sopranos’ creator David Chase and directed by Alan Taylor, who also helmed several of the HBO series’ episodes.
“The Many Saints of Newark” debuts in theaters and HBO Max on October 1. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.
