With yesterday’s re-release of the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut of “Justice League,” fans have once again resumed their rabidness for this extended version of a DC superhero film. And now, it seems, when we talk about the Snyder Cut, we must also reference the Ayer Cut of “Suicide Squad,” which is still in its infancy of a social media campaign but already has quite a few faithful fans pressuring Warner Bros. for a new version of the much-maligned superhero film. And now, it would appear that the Ayer Cut has one more supportive voice in the form of “Suicide Squad” star Margot Robbie.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, Robbie was asked about her thoughts on the fan-approved, hopeful re-release of “Suicide Squad” that goes with filmmaker David Ayer’s original vision for the film. And though she hasn’t seen what that might look like, she’s very intrigued by the prospect.
“I never saw the Ayer Cut,” said Robbie. “I know we shot a lot of stuff that never made it into the movie. I’d be very curious [to see it] myself.”
Make no mistake, the drama surrounding WB’s “Suicide Squad” (not to be confused by James Gunn’s forthcoming “The Suicide Squad”) pales in comparison to “Justice League.” That said, there is a big difference between the version that was sent to theaters and the version that Ayer originally turned into the studio. Reports claim that WB wasn’t impressed by Ayer’s version and got a trailer company to cut together a new version that was eventually released. And though the film made a ton of money, critics were harsh and fans eventually came around to understand that “Suicide Squad” is an incredibly flawed film (to put it mildly).

And with the precedent set, fans are hoping that David Ayer’s Director’s Cut of “Suicide Squad” can get the same treatment as the Snyder Cut. But WB has yet to hint at that being a reality. Now, with Robbie voicing support, maybe there will be renewed interest. We shall see.
