Actor Says He’s Still Plugging Away On Original Script With Comedienne Charlene Yi
Playlist contrib Todd Gilchrist recently sat down with “Freaks and Geeks” alum Martin Starr to talk his role in this weekend’s indie comedy, “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy.” When Starr wasn’t discussing his dick, the film (he called it a “a sweet story about friends”), the joys of working with friends and the travails of the film industry, the comedic actor known for roles in “Freaks & Geeks,” “Knocked Up,” “Superbad,” “Adventureland” and “Party Down” gave us a small taste of what was on the horizon.
In 2009, Starr told various media outlets that he was working with friend and fellow thespian Charlyne Yi (“Knocked Up,” “Paper Heart“) on a script based on “uncomfortable party experiences,” and during our chat he revealed that the two of them are still finishing it up, but their busy schedules have delayed its completion. “We’ve taken our sweet time with it,” he said. “But when she’s done with this movie and working on [Fox TV program] ‘House,’ then we’ll sit down and get cracking on finishing this hopefully final draft. It’s just taken us a long time because we get busy at different times, and sometimes our schedules just conflict in an absolutely wrong way that’s the least useful for our means. Because we sit down and write together every time we write.”
As for a project some had hoped and speculated he might be a part of? Online buzz has swirled for months about who is returning to Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up” spinoff, which focuses primarily on the characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. While folks like Jason Segel are returning, Starr confirmed that he is not appearing in the film, although he did discuss it with Apatow. “I met with Judd on it, and had some fun, but I think the way they mapped things out, I didn’t fit into it,” he explained of the story. “But it sounds like a lot of fun.”
He did however talk to Yi who is returning to the spinoff and things are going well. “I talked to Charlene Yi about it, and she’s having a blast working on it,” he said. And while we may have to wait a while yet for their collaboration to see the light of the day, it is heartening to know that the unique and individual talents of Starr and Yi have found their niche in Hollywood, keeping their calendars full. You can see Yi on “House” this season and in Apatow’s new film in 2012, while Starr stars in ‘Orgy’ now open in limited release.
