Marvel Contemplating Their Own Comic-Con

When it comes to blockbusters, as much thought and money is put into the marketing as the movie itself. As budgets rise, more is on the line, which means studios do all they can to get as many butts in the seats as possible. Thus, events like San Diego Comic-Con can be crucial to the success (or failure) for a movie, where months before its released, a narrative can start to be built around the picture. But sometimes, it’s no fun sharing the spotlight with your competition, and Marvel has wondered whether or not they’re better off on their own.

Kevin Feige has revealed that the powerful comic book studio has contemplated echoing what their colleagues over at Lucasfilm do for “Star Wars,” with a standalone event. To be honest, it’s not a bad idea.

“Over the years there have been discussions about that,” he told Fandango. “I think what we try to do occasionally in San Diego we’re very proud of and think is a fun tradition. That being said, I think [Star Wars] Celebration is pretty amazing.”

“… I think we have enough content, and enough fans, and enough ideas that we could easily do something like that, I’m just not sure where or when,” Feige added.

It’s probably a no-brainer that both fans and press would flock to a weekend of Marvel presentations and announcements, but that kind of decision would be a massive blow to San Diego Comic Con. Marvel clearly understands the relationship that has been forged there, but with the stakes getting bigger for each picture, launching an event under their own banner could be the next logical step.
