With Disney finalizing plans for the highly-anticipated streaming service coming in 2019, many fans have wondered if that spells the end of the agreement with Netflix regarding the stable of Marvel superhero shows on the service. With a total of five Marvel series that have debuted on the service, the relationship between Marvel and Netflix seems to be going pretty well. And according to Netflix, there are no plans on slowing down anytime soon.
Speaking at the recent TCA event (via Deadline), a Netflix executive not only said there’s more Marvel/Netflix goodness in the future, but there actually might be some additional series and spin-offs considered to join “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist,” “The Defenders,” and “The Punisher.”
“There’s always an ongoing discussion about spinning off additional characters into additional properties,” Netflix exec Cindy Holland said. “I don’t have anything to share.”
However, Holland was more excited to share some developments on the upcoming third season of the show that started it all — “Daredevil.” Recently, fans have been concerned that there were behind-the-scenes issues with Season 3 of the superhero show, considering Season 2 premiered back in early 2016. But the executive says there’s no drama, just scheduling conflicts.
“The biggest issue was the timing of production and launching of ‘The Defenders’ because what that meant is we had to shut down all of the shows, so all the actors be available for ‘The Defenders’ so it’s more function of that,” she said. “There is no problem with this season, I think it’s fantastic, it’s real return to form in my view.”
Regarding a ‘Defenders’ follow-up, the executive was less enthusiastic. “It could be possible, there are no plans at this time,” Holland said.
But that doesn’t mean that the characters are sidelined. “Iron Fist” Season 2 is about to debut, with a new offering from “The Punisher” following behind it. Then there are talks of new seasons of “Jessica Jones” and the aforementioned “Daredevil.”
And while “Luke Cage” season 2 seems to have done well for the streaming service, don’t go marking your calendars for season 3 just yet. Said Holland, “We haven’t made any firm decisions yet.”
So, like it or not, the Marvel/Netflix relationship is still going strong, and while quality might be waning (in our eyes, at least), that’s not going to stop them anytime soon.
