It’s been a couple of months since Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced several new MCU shows that would be heading to Disney+. Among them were “She-Hulk” and “Moon Knight,” the first time these characters would star in major projects. After a lack of updates on these shows, we finally got reports that Marvel has finally done something and hired writers to develop and lead the writing team on both shows. Jessica Gao and Jeremy Slater have been tapped to lead “She-Hulk” and “Moon Knight” respectively. There was no information on whether Feige thinks you need to watch these shows to understand future Marvel movies, however.
The reports come from The Hollywood Reporter, who says that Gao will lead the charge in bringing Bruce Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk, to life. Walters was the last major character to be co-created by Stan Lee, and she is an attorney who gained the powers of the Hulk after receiving an emergency blood transfusion from Banner. The catch is that she gains the strength of the Hulk, while still keeping her intelligence and personality.
Though Jessica Walters has appeared in several episodes of Marvel TV-shows through the years, and was almost played by Brigitte Nielsen in a movie, this marks the first time she stars in a show of her own. The character is best known for her comedic personality, and the stories that lean into her life as an attorney, resulting in a show that’s kind of like “Ally McBeal” but with superpowers.
It will be interesting to see what Gao brings to the character. She has previously won an Emmy for writing the “Pickle Rick” episode of Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty.” She has also penned episodes of HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” so we can expect plenty of crazy and funny situations in the Marvel show.
THR also reported that Jeremy Slater will oversee “Moon Knight.” An even more obscure character, with several different origin stories being told throughout the years. The comics focus on Marc Spector, a mentally disturbed mercenary that doubles as a superhero but suffers dissociative identity disorder. He’s kind of Marvel’s answer to Batman, if Bruce Wayne communicated with a lunar god that granted him super-strength. Jeremy Slater is best known for creating Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy,” and the fantastic and underappreciated “The Exorcist” TV show.
There is no release date for these shows just yet.
