Mastodon To Release 'Jonah Hex' EP

With “Jonah Hex” tanking ridiculously hard this weekend, Warner Bros. will be looking to get some money back from that debacle any way possible.

On June 29th, Reprise Records (part of the Warner family) will release a full official soundtrack featuring the score written by Marco Beltrami and Mastodon, as well as a six track EP of Mastodon’s songs composed specifically for the film. The band took the unusual step of composing the music while watching footage from the film; and perhaps the studio might have been wise to seek out their feedback before releasing the film.

Back in April, guitarist Brent Hinds said, “What I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem to be finished to me.” Hinds also commented on the general chaos of the film’s production at the time, which include a switch of composers from John Powell to Beltrami, and the project running into scheduling conflicts with the band’s touring schedule: “And there was no way [Beltrami] could connect with me: they brought all the new scenes to us, but I was on tour this entire time, so I had no time to preconceive what I wanted the movie to sound like. Being so busy…it’s hard to be creative when you’re going through the same motions every day [onstage].” So, if these tunes aren’t up to the usual standard of Mastodon’s blisteringly awesome prog-metal, that’s probably why.
