You may not remember, but Matt Damon has previously been featured in a Marvel Studios film. Back in “Thor: Ragnarok,” the A-lister played a cameo role as a fake Loki during an in-film production of the events of ‘The Dark World.’ It was a silly role that was clearly a result of Damon being a friend of Chris Hemsworth and those involved in the film. At that point, many just assumed that would be the beginning and end of Damon’s run in the MCU. But maybe not…

According to various Australian news outlets, it appears that Matt Damon is reportedly back in Australia to film scenes for “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The actor and his family were spotted getting off a private jet in Sydney, and the news outlets were able to find out that he is in the country to film for ‘Love and Thunder.’ Unfortunately, we don’t know what he’s actually going to do in the film.
You see, in between his appearance in ‘Ragnarok’ and the current state of the MCU, Asgard has been destroyed, Thanos wiped out half of the Asgardian population, and the survivors moved to New Asgard on Earth, which is now run by Valkyrie. Basically, this means that Damon’s actor character somehow survived all that craziness and is back to maybe act out more scenes as fake Loki in a play, or maybe Damon is someone entirely new?
As for the latter option, that’s not completely out of the question. We’ve seen actors play new characters in the MCU before. Perhaps most notably, there was Kenneth Choi who played a character in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and returned as a descendent of that character in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Of course, Damon’s character was seen far less than Choi’s, so maybe they don’t even have to worry about the actor appearing twice.
That said, there’s the other way to make Damon return that is way easier. Perhaps, he’s taking the Taika Waititi way and playing some sort of CGI character or someone under a ton of prosthetics? That would get past the fact that he was featured twice and allow for Damon to continue playing sneaky roles in films. We saw him do this in “Deadpool 2” in a cameo where the actor was completely unrecognizable.
All that to say, Damon appears to be in Australia to work on “Thor: Love and Thunder.” And with COVID restrictions, it would make sense if his role was something more than just a gimmick cameo for a quick laugh, considering his family is going through quarantine with him. But we’ll just have to wait and see when “Thor: Love and Thunder” arrives in theaters on May 6, 2022.
