With the cinematic visionary McG having already tackled a TV adaptation (the “Charlie’s Angels” movies), a weepy sports drama (“We Are Marshall“), an unnecessary sequel (“Terminator Salvation“), and right around the corner, a romantic action/comedy (“This Means War“) it looks like the man with three letters for a name wants to try his hand at something different.
Very hot scribe David Guggenheim, who earned attention for his script to “Safe House” which arrives in theaters next year starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, has penned “Puzzle Palace” and now Summit wants McG to take to it on. The story centers on a lawyer whose father, a veteran cop, who is framed for murder. But damned if the halls of justice are going to sort this one out. Instead, he’s going to break into the super secure One Police Plaza to find the evidence that could free his father, but finds himself locked in with the dirty cops on his tail. So yeah, another B-movie pulse pounder that seems to be a very comfortable genre for Guggenheim. But whether or not he’s a fresh voice remains to be seen as none of his scripts are up on the big screen yet. He’s also got the MY-DAUGHTER-IS-LOCKED-IN-THE-TRUNK-OF-A-TAXI-IN-NYC thriller “Medallion” coming in 2012 as well with Nicolas Fucking Cage freaking out in the Simon West directed film. And that should be entertaining based on the premise + Cage alone.
As for McG? Well, you know how we feel about that guy already, but as long as this keeps him from directing that “Ouija” movie, that’s fine with us. [THR]
