Look, it’s been over seven months since “Justice League” was released and fans were horrified by the disfigured face of Superman actor Henry Cavill. The reason for his messed up face was because the folks at Warner Bros. had to use CGI to erase his mustache that he kept since he was in the middle of another production during reshoots. The end result was a CGI mess of a mouth that looked ridiculous in the final cut of “Justice League.” (But hopefully will get restored to glory in the upcoming “Snyder Cut” right guys? Guys?)
In the reporting that accompanied news of Cavill’s CGI’d face, it was revealed that the actor had to keep his facial hair because he was shooting “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” and was required to have it for filming. Fans were shocked that either A) WB wouldn’t just allow him to have facial hair as Superman in “Justice League” and B) that the folks at ‘M:I’ wouldn’t let him shave and grow it back or use CGI to put facial hair on.
Well, we finally have a more behind-the-scenes look at the issue, thanks to ‘Fallout’ writer-director Christopher McQuarrie. On Twitter, the filmmaker decided to answer the question about “mustache-gate” the best he could, while also referencing that a more detailed discussion about the issue is forthcoming. He tweeted, “The short answer: We made every effort to accommodate [‘Justice League’] without negatively impacting our movie. There’s was nothing we could do.”
Sure, the “short answer” doesn’t really answer much of anything, other than to say what we pretty much put together ourselves – the folks at ‘Fallout’ weren’t going to impact their own movie due to WB’s troubled production of “Justice League.”
Hopefully, when he discusses this issue more on the Empire Podcast, he can give fans a definitive answer so that there’s no more speculation about Cavill’s facial hair. Unfortunately, unless the answer involves a time machine that will fix the actor’s face in the superhero film, there’s not much that McQuarrie can say that will appease fans. But then again, as long as Cavill looks handsome in ‘Fallout,’ does McQuarrie even care?
