Mean Girls, Spongebob Squarepants Rule 2018 Tony Awards Nominations

The nominations for the 72nd Tony Awards were revealed this morning and proved that Hollywood can dominate the Great White Way more than ever.  Granted, film and TV properties making bank on Broadway is nothing new but this year three of the four Best Musical nominees are based on movie or TV shows (“Mean Girls,” “Frozen,” and “Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical”) and three of the five Lead Actor in a Play nominees were nominated or won Oscars over the past three years (Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington and Mark Rylance).  And that doesn’t include acting nominees such as Amy Schumer, Michael Cera, Bryan Tree Henry and Lauren Ambrose.

Sarah Bareilles and Josh Groban are your 2018 Tony Awards hosts

“Mean Girls” and “Spongebob” each earned 12 nominations.  Expected Best Play winner “The Band’s Visit” and the revivals of “Angels in America” and “Carousel” received 11 nominations each.  “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” earned nine nominations.

“Frozen” earned three nominations including Best Musical, Best Book (Jennifer Lee) and Best Original Score (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez), but was snubbed in every other qualifying category.

Laurie Metcalf, who was just nominated for an Oscar for “Lady Bird” and a Tony winner last year, earned her fifth nomination.  Bruce Springsteen and John Leguizamo will earn special Tony Awards while Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

It’s also worth noting Oscar and Tony winner Ann Roth, who had six nominations before today, earned another three for Costume Design for a Musical (“Carousel”) and Costume Design for a Play (“The Iceman Cometh,” “Three Tall Women”).
