All fairness to David Yates, he knows to put spectacle on the big screen, but try as I might, I cannot for the life of me muster any interest in “The Legend Of Tarzan.” It looks beautifully photographed, but also gorgeously dull. I mean, sure, Alexander Skarsgard swinging around shirtless has an appeal for a certain audience, but seriously, how many times is Christoph Waltz going to play this same villain? And it’s pretty unfortunate to see an actress with as much personality as Margot Robbie playing a thankless damsel in distress role.

Emotions out of the way, IMAX has dropped this new trailer for the movie, and if the idea is to sell epic, then mission accomplished I suppose. But like I said, this is almost aggressively boring and at times borderline parody (Tarzan nuzzling a lion!), but the way this summer is going with sequels doing disappointing numbers, and original movies not getting the love they deserve, let’s hope this one surprises us all. Here’s the official synopsis:
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
“The Legend Of Tarzan” opens on July 1st.
