Mel Gibson Teaches A Mexican Kid To Smoke In New Photos From 'Get The Gringo'

nullRight now is either the best time or the worst time for Mel Gibson to be opening a movie called "Get The Gringo." They say there is no such thing as bad press, and like it or not, the new allegations of rage-and-hate-fueled anti-Semitism being leveled at the actor/director guarantees his straight-to-VOD offering will be getting a lot more attention than it might have otherwise.

With the film a few weeks away from being available via the zap of your remote control, a bunch of new images from the movie have dropped online. In "Get The Gringo," Gibson plays the nameless Driver (sorry Ryan Gosling!), an American criminal who violently crashes his car into the border wall as he tries to outrun the U.S. Border Patrol. Driver survives the crash only to land inside a hard-core Mexican prison where he enters the strange and dangerous world of “El Pueblito.”  Driver finds unlikely guidance from a 10-year-old kid who shows him the ropes….and apparently this kid's a smoker too.

Helmed by longtime second unit and assistant director Adrian Grunberg ("Apocalypto," "The Limits Of Control," "Traffic," "Jarhead") the picture certainly has the griminess we'd expect from that logline, though we're curious about how the balance of humor and action played out in the trailer will work here. We'll soon see. "Get The Gringo" lands on DirecTV on May 1st.
