Now that speculation seems to have been quashed over whether Michael Giacchino would inherit John Williams’ spot on J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” gig, the question then turned to where the “Star Trek Into Darkness” composer would land next, besides the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending.” But in record time, Giacchino has continued to prove himself one of the most sought-after in the business, and attached himself to another successful sci-fi franchise.
Giacchino recently popped up on Twitter to announce his latest gig, writing, “This is how I will dress when recording the score for Matt Reeves’ ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes!’ ” accompanied by a picture of a monkey in a conductor’s uniform, holding a baton. Reeves’ film has made pretty good use of social media so far, as this comes just days after the “Let Me In” director posted our first look at the sequel, which stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Kodi-Smit McPhee, and, of course, Andy Serkis.
Giacchino will step in place of composer Patrick Doyle (“Thor”), who lent his work to the first entry of the rebooted series, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” but Jerry Goldsmith really stands as the figurehead to the series’ sound, and the one that Doyle resurrected when it came to that film. Coming off a similarly daunting task with ‘Star Trek,’ Giacchino should have no problem turning in a memorable score as the ‘Apes’ series continues (especially given his previous collaboration with Reeves on the stunning “Let Me In” score). “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” hits theaters on May 23rd, 2014.
