What’s the best way you’ve ever been notified of a new job? If your answer isn’t “onstage in front of hundreds of your admiring fans,” then clearly, you’ve picked the wrong career path. This can’t be said of Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, whose role in the upcoming “The Batman” movie was announced during his recent Settling the Score event in London. Certainly makes that call from human resources seem a little less momentous, yeah?

As reported by Empire Magazine‘s Chris Hewitt, Giacchino was surprised (“surprised”) onstage on Friday by ‘Batman’ director Matt Reeves, who dropped to one knee and offered his longtime collaborator an invitation to write the music for the new franchise. This will be the fourth time that Giacchino has served as the primary composer on a Matt Reeves film, and Giacchino will join composers Danny Elfman (“Batman“), Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard (“Batman Begins“), and Lorne Balfe (“The Lego Batman Movie“) in the modern Bat-family of musicians.

On his website, Giacchino describes his Settling the Score event as “a night of award-winning film and TV music from legendary composers, David Arnold and Michael Giacchino, as they strike up the orchestra and go into symphonic battle.” While it’s hard to know how the two composers were keeping score throughout the night, something tells me getting asked to direct ‘Batman’ as the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra watches put Giacchino comfortably in the lead.
