Filmmaker Michel Gondry‘s is deceptively unpinnable. While he’s often pegged as whimsical surrealist—“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Science of Sleep,” “Mood Indigo“— there’s a whole other side to his work that’s social and realist with omnipresent themes of community. Documentaries like “The Thorn in the Heart,” “Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?” and the narrative “The We and the I” all reflect that idea. Hell, even “Be Kind Rewind,” for as zany as it is, is really, at the end of the day about community. Gondry tries all kinds of things, narratives, docs, big-budget blockbusters (“Green Hornet“) and even TV. However, the filmmaker hasn’t forgotten his roots with music videos, and they still keep him busy. See this most recent one from The Chemical Brothers.

“Got to Keep On” marks the fourth collaboration on a music video with Gondry and the British electronic group. And yes, the video does start in a very subdued way (by Gondry standards, at least), with various dancers doing some incredibly limber things with their bodies. However, slowly, over the course of the video, you start to realize that not everything is as it seems. Then as you reach the last minute or so, all bets are off and you’re fully invested into whatever the directors have coming next.
Yes, we said directors, plural. Michel is joined by Olivier Gondry, his brother, as helmers of this music video and they’ve collaborated a ton over the years. All told, Gondry is responsible for well over 75 music videos with artists ranging from The Rolling Stones and The White Stripes to Kylie Minogue and Björk.
