As the series has continued to be picked up throughout the years, “The Mindy Project,” created by star Mindy Kaling, has evolved with the time. Beginning as a slightly run of the mill, romantic comedy, half-hour sitcom, the show, coupled with its jump to Hulu, has becoming some more noticeably adult. The maturation has felt natural, even as it’s meant going through rough patches when the series didn’t realize (or didn’t care) that her main love interest (for a time), Danny (Chris Messina), was a manipulative jerk or jumping from one tone to the other before landing in a medium that felt just right for the series. As it enters its final season, we pick up after Mindy has made the decision to marry her boyfriend Ben played by Bryan Greenberg. The moment contains a look of doubt from the titular character, something that undoubtedly will be addressed come the finale episodes.
And while the show has been relatively solid for the past few seasons, there’s no doubting that the enthusiasm over it’s return (or awareness that it was still going) hadn’t dimmed, making Kaling and co.’s decision to end the show make all the more sense. In an interview with ET, she said:
“I think the timing is exactly right. What’s weird is, Mindy is married at the end of the season 5 finale, but she has never been married in the series, so that’s incredibly fun for a character who’s been obsessed with [marriage] and has come close many times, and seeing her disavow it for a while after her disastrous breakup with who she thought was her soulmate. And now she’s married! The final season is the final time—it’s the besttime—to confront what that reality is for her.”
At least we won’t have to wait very long to see Kaling return to our screens, this time in the multiplexes in Ava DuVernay’s hotly anticipated adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time.” The show might be ending, but Kaling’s star will only continue to rise. “The Mindy Project” hits Hulu on September 12th.
