An occasional downside to films premiering at film festivals is hearing early praise and then having to wait before even any proper release dates are made public. A personal example is wanting to see Jerrod Carmichael’s “On the Count of Three,” which over a year after its premiere at Sundance 2021 has had complete radio silence in regards to a proper release. At the exact same time, film festivals are a great way to offer word of mouth and showcase up-and-coming talent on a grandiose stage. If a film makes waves at a festival, it can ride that tide all the way to awards season. Here, with its first trailer after its TIFF premiere last September (Read our review for it linked here and below) is “Montana Story.”

At the center of that aforementioned “up and coming talent” in “Montana Story” are its leads, Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague. Richardson very recently shined in Kogonada’s “After Yang” in a small but memorable performance, after previously teaming up with the director in “Columbus.” Teague lately is spending time in the horror genre, with roles in Stephen King adaptations like “IT: Chapter Two” and “The Stand.” Arriving in theaters next month, “Montana Story” is the next place to see these young actors.
Here’s the official synopsis:
From the acclaimed writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel (“What Maisie Knew,” “The Deep End”) comes a neo-Western with an emotional tremor hiding beneath it. Two estranged siblings (Haley Lu Richardson, Owen Teague) return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved, confronting a deep and bitter family legacy against a mythic American backdrop.
