Disney+ Day is upon us. Along with the streaming premieres of “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings” and “Jungle Cruise,” and season two of “The World According To Jeff Goldblum,” the celebration also includes updates on many upcoming Marvel and Star Wars series.
Phase 4 of the MCU is well underway, and given Marvel’s penchant for advance notice, fans already know what to expect in 2022. So, what’s the most intriguing movie/show on next year’s calendar? The answer may be “Moon Knight,” not only for the peculiarity of the character but also for the stars and directors involved.
The new series stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, an ex-marine operative with dissociative identity disorder who acts as a conduit for an ancient Egyptian god named Khonshu. As Moon Knight, Spector’s various split identities are distinct traits of the god and his qualities. Therefore, Spector’s superhuman abilities are arguably the product of enforced psychic trauma that results in mental illness. That’s a tricky take on an origin story.
Details remain slim on other cast members, save for Egyptian actress May Calamawy and Ethan Hawke, who plays the show’s villain. Speculation abounds about Hawke’s role, but the actor reportedly used cult leader David Koresh as inspiration.
Jeremy Slater, best known for “The Umbrella Academy” and “The Exorcist” TV series, is the showrunner of “Moon Knight.” Egyptian director Mohamed Diab splits directing duties with the filmmaking team of Justin Benson & Aaron Moorehead. Those familiar with Benson & Moorehead will realize they’re perfect fits for this show’s material.
News about “Moon Knight” and its production has been hard to come by. However, given who’s involved, its shooting locations in Jordan and Hungary, and the star power of Oscar Isaac, expect it to be a must-watch in 2022. Check out the teaser below.
