Here’s the thing about Comic-Con. You can’t be everywhere at once and no matter how much planning you put into it, there is always something you’re going to miss or in this case, a surprise you didn’t see coming. So for those who were at Animation Showcase in Hall H early yesterday afternoon, they got a treat as director Morgan Spurlock showed up and showed a teaser trailer for his forthcoming documentary “Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope.” Say what?
That’s right, everyone’s favorite stunt documentary director, the man behind “Super Size Me,” “Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?” and last year’s “Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” has been quietly working on a documentary about everyone’s favorite geek fest for a while now. The project first cropped up two summers ago and became official last year, so what’s it all about? The concept is quite (surprisingly) simple, with the film tracking seven different people from around America as they prepare for the geek-beauty of Comic-Con. No word yet if Spurlock made them eat McDonald’s or get corporate sponsorship along the way.
Cinema Blend was on hand to catch the teaser trailer and it certainly did tease. While it didn’t show the subjects of his upcoming movie, it did feature celebrity testimonials from folks like Eli Roth, Seth Green, Joss Whedon and Guillermo del Toro with the latter colorfully stating, “Comic-Con is like a Russian doll. There are many Comic-Cons within Comic-Cons.”
But Whedon put it best describing the San Diego confab thusly in the tease: “Get on a roller coaster, put your head in a jar of marbles and drop acid, and that’s what it’s like to be at Comic-Con for five minutes.” Yeah dude, we know the feeling. And this writer isn’t even there.
THR adds that Spurlock revealed that the film will be ready for this fall, possibly for an October release, but since he’s still putting it together, it’s unlikely to hit festivals like TIFF or Telluride before then.
