Steven Soderbergh attempted to push everyone into the future last fall with his interactive app based narrative “Mosaic.” However, it doesn’t seem like many people took the plunge, so if you prefer your murder mysteries laid out in a more linear fashion, you’ll get just that with the series version of the show.

Starring Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Jennifer Ferrin, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Devin Ratray, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb, Michael Cerveris and Maya Kazan, the story follows popular children’s book author and illustrator Olivia Lake, whose literary success makes her a local celebrity in the tight-knit community. At the annual fundraiser, where she is accompanied by trusted friend and confidante JC, she sets her sights on a handsome, young newcomer in town, aspiring graphic artist Joel Hurley. Encouraged by the doting and flirtatious Olivia, he accepts her offer for a place to stay and work, but the unexpected arrival of Joel’s girlfriend, Laura, sends Olivia into a jealous tailspin. So love, murder and memory all wind up colliding.
Soderbergh shot tons of footage for “Mosaic,” and in fact, the limited series version of the show isn’t just the app-based stuff cut together differently. “There’s a fair amount of material that didn’t make the app version that will be in the broadcast linear version that will air on HBO. We shot a lot of stuff!” Soderbergh said last fall.
Development is underway on season two, but HBO will likely see if people dig the first season before making any decisions. “Mosaic” lands on January 22nd.
