'mother!' Drops New Clip, Breaks Glass

By the time the final “Harry Potter” film came out, Warner Bros. released so many clips and stills that it felt like fans could practically assemble it themselves. Paramount Pictures seems determined to do the same with “mother!,” Darren Aronofsky’s new psychological thriller; just a day after releasing a 30-second teaser that offered a barrage of seemingly disconnected images, the studio dropped a full clip from the film – paired with another barrage of different seemingly disconnected images.

In the new clip, a conversation between Mother (Jennifer Lawrence) and Him (Javier Bardem) is interrupted by the sound of something shattering in another room of their dilapidated country home. Racing upstairs, Bardem’s character discovers that the couple’s new guests Man (Ed Harris) and Woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) apparently dropped and destroyed a precious heirloom. Consumed by rage, Him gestures for them to leave the room and commences cleaning up the mess himself. As Mother moves to comfort Him, she is horrified to discover him grinding the broken glass into his hands, and shuts the door as he urges her to leave.

The Playlist’s review, along with several others, waxed rhapsodic about Aronofsky’s go-for-broke creativity in the film. Let’s hope that the rest of us don’t have it unveiled piecemeal or spoiled outright via more clips between now and its September 15 opening day.
