One of our most anticipated films of the year, Darren Aronofsky horror/thriller ‘s “mother!” is one the way, and now we have our first taste. You can check out its previously released creepy teaser poster here.
While the Jennifer Lawrence starring film has been kept under wraps since shooting last year, we do know that the plot revolves around a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.
There is not a lot there but Aronofsky has never made a bad movie, and this newest film has been a long time coming considering that his previous film, the big budget biblical epic “Noah” was released in 2014. He has, however, stayed busy as a producer with this year’s “Aftermath” and last year’s “Jackie.” “mother!” will also mark a return to Aronofsky shooting on 16mm. When previously discussing the film at the Reykjavik Film Festival last year, he stated:
“I think all my early films were more about ideas … When it came to ‘Noah,’ there was this clear environmental statement in the original gospel, which was interesting to push forward. My latest project probably has similar political intentions behind it, but first and foremost responsibility as a narrative filmmaker is making something that is emotional and can connect with an audience.”
In addition to Lawrence, “mother!” co-stars Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig. Based on Aronofsky’s own script, the film was shot by his regular director of photography Matthew Libatique and scored by “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and “Blade Runner 2049” composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (making this Aronofsky’s first film not scored by regular contributor Clint Mansell).
“mother!” opens on September 15th.
