The Emmys, TV’s biggest awards, don’t have the same kind of awards industrial complex around them, and that’s entirely for the best — without the legions of predictors and precursors in the same way that the Oscars have, there’s more room for surprises and shocks. But there are a few, and one of the biggest is the TCA Awards, or Television Critics’ Association.
They’ve been going for 32 years, but have likely rarely had a year with as much to pick from as they do here, and their 2016 nominations, announced today via Variety, has spread the wealth around appropriately. “Mr. Robot” and “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” lead the field with four nominations each, while “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Master Of None,” “The Americans” and “UnReal” are just behind with three.
It’s a list with a lot to like about it, from comedy nominations for Constance Wu, Aya Cash and Samantha Bee (in a field with five women and only one man), to a new show nod for “Underground” and a very tough Program Of The Year field. You can read the list of nominees below, and find out the winner on August 6th.
