MTV Movie & TV Awards Adds Two New Categories With Five Days To Go Because Why Not?

It was already pretty unclear how the producers of the MTV Movie & TV Awards plan on incorporating the announcement of 16 categories into a two-hour telecast.  A challenge that would is obviously more difficult considering the program that will also include performances from Big Sean, Pitbull and Noah Cyrus, among others.  Well, the Adam Levine hosted event just made things bizarrely more complicated by adding two more categories into the mix.  Then again, people care about the categories and winners on MTV awards shows less than who won a Teen Choice Award.

MTV announced today that fans can now vote for the “Trending” and “Best Musical Moment” categories.  The MTV Movie Awards, as it was previously known, has sporadically given out Best Original Song (1992-99, 2009, 2012) and Best Musical Sequence (2000-2002, 2005, 2014) awards over the years which made sense in theory because, well, MTV is supposed to stand for Music Television right? (Actually, don’t answer that).  Nominees from both movies and television vying for the “Musial Moment” field include Justin Timberlake‘s Grammy winning, but Oscar losing “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from “Trolls” and the recent cover of “Beauty and the Beast” by Ariana Grande and John Legend from Disney’s global blockbuster.

The Trending honor feels slightly forced, but Melissa McCarthy‘s performance on “SNL” as Sean Spicer, Lady Gaga‘s “Carpool Karaoke” ride and Winona Ryder‘s reaction to “Stranger Things‘” SAG Awards win are a few of the viral moments that will vie for a statue.

You can vote for the winners on MTV.com until the day of the telecast.  We think.

Here’s a rundown of both new categories.  You can see the previously announced categories here.
