After a first look at CinemaCon and just in time to accompany DC’s latest film, “Shazam,” comes the trailer for action-comedy “My Spy.”
“I’m just not that good with people..” are the first words we hear from Dave Bautista‘s character in the trailer, presumably setting us up to watch him be “good with people” or at least children. “My Spy” follows a hardened CIA operative, JJ who finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, Sophie (Chloe Coleman), having been sent undercover to surveil her family.
Realizing what JJ does for a living, Sophie cuts a deal with him to learn how to be a spy. A lie detector test, practicing walking away from an explosion, and what seems to be an unlikely friendship later Sophie seems to have quite the influence on JJ.
According to ScreenRant, at CinemaCon, STX Films boss Adam Fogelson took to the stage to tease the company’s upcoming slate, which includes “My Spy.”
When speaking about why they’ve teamed up with Bautista, Fogleson stated, “The first time that I heard and saw Dave Bautista laugh on screen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ I knew for certain I wanted him to star in one of our films. The combination of superhuman size and strength married with the incredible warmth he exudes, by the way, both on screen and in person, and the acting ability he has demonstrated in films like Blade Runner, is all completely captivating.”
Starring alongside Bautista and Coleman are Ken Jeon, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Kristen Schaal, and Nikki Hahn.
The film is directed by Peter Segal and was written by Jon and Erich Hoeber.
“My Spy” is one of several projects STX is developing with Bautista, and it is slated to hit theatres later this year.
