With summer in full swing, we can already start to lay out which films will be ready to go for the upcoming fall film festival. That’s the time of year when the studios trot out their best contenders for hopes that the festival appearances will build buzz leading into the coveted awards season. And while we don’t know for certain, according to Noah Hawley, Fox Searchlight is likely going to include the upcoming “Lucy in the Sky” as one of those fall festival picks.
Speaking to Indiewire, Hawley, who is probably best known as the creative force behind hit FX series “Fargo” and “Legion,” is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming drama “Lucy in the Sky,” with the hopes that it’s ready to go and selected to be part of one of the fall film festivals.
“The movie is locked,” Hawley said. “I’m mixing right now, and I’m doing the final finishing touches.”

He continued, “The studio has their strategy that they’re building toward a release, and it’s Searchlight, so unlike Disney, which dates their movies three years in advance, they’re quite used to going out [to festivals]. And all those festivals that are in anticipation of fall are starting to look at movies now, so we’re going through that process to figure out the best strategy to release it.”
“Lucy in the Sky” is a drama that follows the story of a female astronaut that begins to spiral out of control after a torrid love affair with one of her fellow astronauts. It’s loosely based on a true story.
The filmmaker was also asked about the rumors that the film was in trouble, due to reports of reshoots. And as we have seen with films in the past, if reshoots become public knowledge, film fans always expect the worst. However, as Hawley explained, that’s not the case at all.
“It was just an ending sequence, which I think is very common — less common on movies of a certain budget, but endings are in some ways the most important part. In a movie like this, in the journey we were on, it needed an extra piece,” he said.
“Lucy in the Sky” stars Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, Zazie Beetz, and Ellen Burstyn. The film is written and directed by Hawley, who is making his feature film directorial debut.
